José Ferrer
Winemaker on Secastilla
José Ferrer is the Manager and winemaker at Viñas del Vero, Secastilla and Blecua. Degree in Technical Chemical Engineering from the University of Zaragoza, Postgraduate studies in Strategic Procurement, Masters in Viticulture and Oenology, Oenologist, and Masters in business administration from ESADE.
He was born on October 5, 1967 in Barbastro, and has had an excellent professional career. As a teacher, he has participated in numerous courses, tastings, conferences and discussion sessions, both in Spain and in other countries and has published numerous technical articles in the leading specialist magazines.
He is currently a member of the Regulatory Board of the Somontano Denomination of Origin. He is also a member of the D.O.’s tasting panel.
José Ferrer claims that in Secastilla “we pamper the vineyard because we believe that it is the basis of a good wine, we work to make quality wines, delicate and complex wines, where the fruit dominates and the wood is only a slight touch that fine-tunes the result. We have invested in the vineyards, technology and the winery with the sole purpose of producing the best wine we are capable of from each vintage”.
José Ferrer is proud of how Viñas del Vero has progressed. In December 1998 the winery received the Food Award of Spain, granted by the Ministry of Agriculture, “for its effort in innovation and research in winemaking and for its significant promotion and marketing activity”, being the first Spanish winery to receive this award. For him, “passion, innovation and quality” are the three parameters that define Viñas del Vero.
He has a soft spot for the native Garnacha grape and maintains that “we were the first in Somontano to work with foreign single varieties and we pioneered the rediscovery of the ancient Garnachas of the Secastilla Valley”.
