What is a “Vino de Pago”?

Pago is a Spanish word for a single vineyard whose characteristics set it apart from others in the same area. These differences can be due to factors such as soil structure, geographic orientation or specific vine clones cultivated there. The result of these special characteristics confer upon these singular vineyards an exceptional fruit quality.

When was the Association founded?

Since 2000, a group of Single Estate wine producers, that is, elaborators that work exclusively with their own grapes from a single vineyard, all located in the center of Spain, got together to highlight the unique personality that defines these wines and to extend and promote their culture across Spain. This Non-Profit Association was called Grandes Pagos de España in 2004.

What are the prerequisites to belong to GPE?

The GPE Association contains various requisites in its statutes which include that the wine must come from an exceptional single vineyard, that its winery should have attained a demonstrable fame with at least five years of recognised prestige in the marketplace and high marks in national and international competitions. The winery must pass a meticulous inspection by a technical auditing committee, and its wines must surpass the quality requirements set at a vertical tasting to be conducted by the general assembly of our Association.

What are the regions where Grandes Pagos de España is present?

Our wineries are located in the following 20 vinicultural zones: Rías Baixas, Toro, Ribera del Duero, Rioja, Navarra, Somontano, Costers del Segre, Cava, Penedés, Priorat, Alicante, Utiel Requena, Manchuela, La Mancha, Ribera del Guadiana, Málaga, Montilla-Moriles, Tierra de León, Txakoli de Álvava and Jerez.

Which varieties are cultivated in Grandes Pagos de España?

In total we cultivate 44 grape varieties, the most interesting being: Tempranillo, Garnacha, Cariñena, Bobal, Monastrell, Syrah, Verdejo, Viura, Petit Verdot, Albariño, Parellada, Moscatel, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay etc.

One of the two major tools of the Association are the Knowledge Network and the External Committee of Expert Tasters. What are they, who forms part and how do they work?

An important part of our Quality, Credibility and Prestige is based on our External Committee of Expert Tasters, who controls in sessions of blind tastings annually the quality of every single wine in Grandes Pagos de España and ensures they fulfill our exigent requirements. Moreover, they visit our wineries and make sure their projects, estates, philosophy and methods applied match our understanding of premium Single Estate Wines. Members of the Committee are prestigious expert tasters and form part of our Knowledge Network. The Knowledge Network is a Committee of professionals that get together with the objective of exchanging know-how, latest techniques and philosophy in our wine-making and contribute to advance the best wine elaboration practices.

In Spain, there is a group of winegrowers who live and breathe the pursuit of exceptional wines. They are growers who cherish their estates and respect the surrounding environment, treating the land as if it were a collection of true gems.

These are people who cultivate the soil with the same dedication and care that Mother Nature lavishes upon their vineyards—bestowing the finest resources (soil, nature, and climate) and even extraordinary beauty.

When these winegrowers met and tasted one another’s wines, they realized they shared not only a passion and a working philosophy but also the potential to go a step further by joining forces to craft exceptional wines. Thus, *Grandes Pagos de España* was born.

MISSION

The desire to champion the unique character of *vinos de pago*—and to showcase their culture and distinctiveness—inspired a group of winegrowers to found Grandes Pagos de España.

This non-profit association brings together 29 prestigious wineries from across the country, united by a shared guiding principle: crafting excellent wines in harmony with the soil, nature, and climate of each individual vineyard.
