Winemaker on Griñón Family Estates
Julio Mourelle was raised in La Coruña (Galicia) and is currently the winemaker for Marques Griñon Family Estates. He holds a BS in Pharmacy from the University of Santiago (Spain) where he majored in Plant Physiology. Having finished his studies, he moved on to do a Masters in Food Science (Viticulture and Oenology) at the University of California, Davis, where he was tutored by Roger Boulton.
While he was doing his Masters he did internships at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars and also became the assistant winemaker for Sterling Vineyards (Napa Valley) where he was put in charge of experimental wines. His experiences in California and his close encounter with their cutting edge viticultural and oenological techniques deeply influenced Julio’s views on wine and its making.
In 1995 Julio returned from the USA and became the winemaker for Dominio de Valdepusa. One of Spain’s most advanced wineries, which was at that time already pioneering various new world techniques in Europe.
Julio has been working as Carlos’right hand man for more than 24 years and has been a key player in Valdepusa’s permanent development and commitment towards quality and terroir personality in their wines.
